Troubleshooting sync issues

Important note: This document was written for a previous version of passwords. The pictures illustrated on this page are no longer accurate. An updated version for the current release will be available asap.

If the connection with the desktop client does not work try the following checks:

  • Check if the "Host sync service" at the bottom of the login screen of the desktop app is set
  • Check if there is a blue notification at the bottom of the desktop up which says "HTTP could not register URL http://+8000/SyncService/." or something similar in your language. If this is the case, go to settings on the upper right of the login screen and click the button "Register in firewall now" and try it again by disabling and enabling the checkbox  again
  • If it is still not working, the port might already be occupied by another application. So go to the settings again and change the default port to 8001, 8002, or something close to 8000 And disable and enable the ceckbox to see if it worked.
  • If this still doesn’t work, reset your port to 8000 and then start the desktop app with elevated rights by selecting the icon with the right mouse button and select "run as administrator". If there is no error at the bottom now, it hints that the port registration in the windows firewall failed for some reasons. Therefore start the windows firewall configuration (type "firewall" in the window start menu) and select "advanced settings" on the left sidebar to open the windows firewall with advanced security window. On the left select "inbound rule" and on the right "new rule…". In the dialog, select Port and press next. Now  select the preselect TCP  and in specific port enter 8000 (or whatever port you prefer). Press next and ensure  All connections to be selected. In the next screen uncheck domain and public and only check private. In the last screen, enter the name for that rule, e.g. "Passwords" and press finish. Now restart the desktop app again without elevated rights and there should be no error message.
  • If you don’t have the "HTTP could not register URL" error at the bottom, then the service is working fine and this is a connection issue continue the following steps:
  • In the settings screen, copy the url (e.g. http://WORKSTATION1:8000/SyncService) and copy it in your browser, but ensure the "Host sync service" to be checked. The browser should display a page with the title SyncService Service. Try this in from another pc. If you can’t access the page, then replace the name of the pc (in the example it’s WORKSTATION1) with the local IP of that pc. You can get this IP by executing ipconfig in a command shell labeled as "IPv4 Address". Now enter the url in the other pc with the ip (e.g. http://192.168.1.222:8000/SyncService). If it works now, then your router can’t resolver the name. Look at the manual of your router, or just stick with the IP if it does not change.
  • Enter the ip described before in the wp7 browser and to see if it works now. If it works, passwords should now be possible to sync with your pc. If not there is another firewall isue either caused by a foreign software firewall or the router’s firewall. Look in the manual to see how to enable specific ports to pass through and enable the port 8000, or another available port and specify that port number in the settings of both, destop and phone.
  • Now there should be no reason why synchronizing is still not working.

  1. Hi, I still get the error message “http://+8000/SyncService/….”. The registration with Windows Firewall works fine, I can see the entry, and even when I disable the firewall and my antivirus software completely, I still get the error message. And I cannot run the application as an administrator because it is a ClickOnce Application.

I’m running Win 7 64bit with Windows Firewall and MS Security Essentials as Antivirus.

    Help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Greetings, Fabian

I hope you can add sync with Windows Live SkyDrive

    • tgerbermcpd says:

no, I can’t support synchronization because it requires a direct point to point connection, but I can and will add backup restore functionality over skydrive. The beta version of the skydrive sdk is already available and expected to be released in november.

i have same problem to login

    • tgerbermcpd says:

With the next version, which will be available after christmas, I will introduce skydrive backup, restore and even sync in addition to direct pc sync. It will also be possible to sync with different pc’s and limit some the passwords by categories, e.g. if you have an office pc, you can set to sync only passwords which are added to the category “office” or so.

    Hi Tom,

When I sync Passwords on my Windows phone to the PC It shows categories and passwords syncing then says that the Synchronization completed successfully, but they do not appear in the Password app on the PC. And when I click on Pc restore on the phone it says the service is not available. I go to backup & restore in Passwords on the PC and there are no files there.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Damon

    • tgerbermcpd says:

        http://localhost:8000/PasswordsSync/Ping/Test
        angeben und bekommt als ergebnis
        Test response

    Hallo,

ich bekomme es nicht hin. Phone Version 3.2; PC Version 3.0. Bekomme immer Fehlermeldung: The remote server returned an error NotFound.

    Hello,

Silly question. Cannot properly remember my master password so I need to start over. How do I do that? Uninstalling is not enough. What elsedo I need to do (i.e., delete database, etc.)?

    • tgerbermcpd says:

The Database is not being uninstalled. Therefore you must delete it manually. You dont need to uninstall the app. Just deleting the db, and a bew one is created on next start.

  11. Steve says:

Hi, up until a few days ago, i was syncing over skydrive no problem Now i’m getting the following error when i press the skydrive “sign in” button in the PC app and also in the Phone app……”Oops, there was a problem. The provided value for the input parameter ‘redirect url’ is not valid. The domain of the provided redirect URL must match the domain of the redirect url registered for this app”. So now i cant sync anymore. Any solution?

Hi, thanks for the updates to the phone and pc versions. The phone version can now access skydrive ok. The PC version however, stil has issues. When i try and backup to skydrive from PC version, it asks for filename and password but then crashes. Similar trying to restore from Skydrive. I found the following, hope its of some help. How do you connect Nokia 920 to Windows 8 desktop client? My phone is connected (and can be seen in computer menu) but Passwords 3.0 desktop says: No phones. I have no idea how to connect it?

    • tgerbermcpd says:

Windows Phone 8 does not support direct sync with pc anymore.
But the pc app will soon be upgrated to use skydrive sync to be compatible with the windows phone 8 and windows 8 app.
